Hyun-Jin Ryu

Lower Half: Ryu’s lower half is very apparent compared to other pitchers. He sits early and drifts forward slowly. He keeps his hip, knee, and ankle extremely closed for a long period of time. His direction towards home with his front leg is awesome. When he finally opens his foot, knee, and hip he slams them down and opens them extremely quick. His knee does not get completely turned towards home until after he throws the pitch. There is slight instability in his front leg due to landing slightly closed with his front foot. Since he sits so low so early, he is not able to maintain steady decline down the slope of the mound through his delivery. This causes him to become rotational at the end. In most pitchers this would cause them to stand up a little and not get great extension through the pitch. Ryu stays down in his legs throughout his pitch incredibly and consistently well.

Upper Half: Ryu breaks his hands extremely early which usually means a long arm action. Ryu hides the ball behind his body very well. This makes it very hard for the hitter to pick up from his “window”. He also stands on the left side of the mound. This makes it that much harder on lefties to pick up the ball out of his hand. Ryu’s scap load isn’t crazy but, it is timed very well, doesn’t get their early or late.
