Lower half
DeGrom’s lower half is very smooth. He has very long legs, which most long legged pitchers look very awkward, DeGrom does not. The direction of his lower half is straight towards home or what I like to call “direct”. This just means he takes his foot straight towards home while coming down from the “balance position”. His foot opens relatively early compared to pitchers who “swing” their leg out and around when coming down from the “balance position”. He creates more linear potential energy as he travels down the mound by being direct towards home. This means he does not have to coil his body into as much counter rotation as other pitchers who “swing” their leg out and around.
Upper Half
DeGrom’s upper half has undergone a slight transformation over the years. His arm is now taking a shorter path in order to get into the “cocked” position. The “cocked” position is when the arm is up in a 90° to 45°degree angle at the elbow towards the head. DeGrom also does an incredible job at maintain good posture throughout his delivery. His torso stays “stacked” over his body while moving down the mound. Getting the arm into the cocked position while staying stacked over your body is the key to throwing “down hill”.
